For any wedding, food plays a central role, bringing guests together and creating moments of joy around the table. As we explored in our Wedding Catering Guide, catering often takes up around 25% of your total budget. That’s why timely planning of your wedding menu and understanding the costs involved are key steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for you and your guests.
If you’re tying the knot in one of the UK’s busiest cities, like London, the choices can be overwhelming. From elegant fine dining to creative street food setups, there’s something to suit every style and taste. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about wedding caterer costs in London, helping you plan a day that’s as delicious as it is memorable.
Why Catering is a Major Investment for Your Wedding
Catering is at the heart of your wedding day, creating moments that your guests will remember long after the celebration. Gaye from Mamacitas Catering Services agrees, saying, “Food makes 50% of the event experience for the guests, so I think if the food is bad at an event, there is a problem.”
Guests might forget the finer details of your décor or table settings, but they will always remember a delicious and well-presented meal. Great food brings people together, sets the mood for your celebration, and ensures your guests feel appreciated. Investing in quality catering creates moments of joy that your friends and family will talk about long after the day is over.
Average Wedding Caterer Costs in London
At Togather, we work closely with our suppliers, gathering insights through regular surveys and day-to-day conversations to help couples like you plan unforgettable weddings. Along with this qualitative feedback we can gain insight from the 1000s of wedding catering requests that come through our platform to establish patterns, trends and importantly, how prices vary in London depending on what types of things people are expecting. When it comes to catering in London, costs can vary widely depending on your preferences, guest count, and the style of service you choose.
In Greater London, the average cost of wedding catering sits at around £51 per head. For more informal options like street food trucks, that average is lower at £28 per head and at the lowest end you might find prices starting at £10 per head, while luxurious, bespoke dining experiences can climb well into the hundreds.
London’s wedding catering scene offers endless possibilities to suit your style and budget. You might opt for a creative setup like a food truck serving crowd-pleasing dishes, a beautifully styled grazing table filled with seasonal produce, or an elegant multi-course meal that adds a touch of luxury to your day. With such a variety of options, it’s easy to design a menu that feels personal, enhances your celebration, and also remains under your budget. Further on in this blog, we’ll take a look at how certain factors like catering style affect pricing.
When taking a look at budget increments of £500 we can see that 78% of wedding catering requests in London sit between the £1000 and £8000 mark with 10% under £1000 and 12% over the £8000 budget.
What Affects Wedding Caterer Costs in London?
Wedding catering costs in London are influenced by several factors. We spoke to some of our top London wedding caterers to get some insight into what variables often influence their pricing.
Location Impact
Where you choose to host your wedding can have a big impact on catering costs. In Central London, additional expenses like congestion charges, parking fees, and travel time often come into play. Caterers our businesses, and they factor in travel time and these charges.
One of our suppliers from Marie et Marcelle, Pauline, shared that, “For London catering or events, this tends to range between £50–£100.” Understanding these location-related costs early can help you plan your budget more effectively.
Guest Count
The size of your guest list is one of the biggest factors in determining catering costs, as most services charge per head. While larger guest counts can sometimes lead to volume discounts, they also mean higher costs for ingredients, staffing, and equipment. It’s a good idea to provide your caterer with a firm estimate as early as possible to avoid unexpected surprises later. Be sure to account for a few extra guests to ensure there’s enough food for everyone and to avoid any last-minute stress if your numbers change.
Type of Cuisine
What’s on the menu can make a big difference to your catering costs. Options like classic dishes or street food are often more affordable, while premium choices like sushi or gourmet multi-course meals can raise the price. Our events team, who works closely with suppliers, shared that accommodating dietary requirements, such as vegan or gluten-free options, might add a small extra cost depending on the preparation involved. Crafting a menu that feels personal while keeping these details in mind is a great way to balance taste and budget.
When taking a look at the cuisines that people enquire about on our platform here’s what we found:
Top 5 most expensive cuisines
Seasonal: £65ph
Modern British: £62ph
Sustainable: £61ph
Italian: £61ph

Top 5 least expensive cuisines

Service Style
When planning your wedding menu, the way food is served can make all the difference to the vibe of your day and the overall costs. A sit-down meal adds a formal touch but often requires more staff, ideally one server per 11 guests, which can increase expenses. Buffets are a more budget-friendly option and give your guests the chance to choose from a variety of dishes. For something more creative, interactive food stations or food trucks can add a fun and memorable element, though they might involve extra setup costs.
When taking a look at service styles we found that formal dining had the highest average budget in London close to £5200. Food stations and Buffets came in at the other end of the scales, closer to £3000.
The Venue
Your wedding venue determines how the caterers will operate throughout the day to set up and serve the food. Outdoor venues may require portable kitchens, heating units, or generators, which can add to your costs. If the venue doesn’t have kitchen facilities, you might need to hire additional equipment like crockery, cutlery, or cooking stations to ensure smooth service.
Accessibility can also affect catering logistics. Venues with narrow staircases or no lifts may need extra staff and time for setup. Some venues may have a list of approved caterers, so it’s a good idea to confirm any restrictions or requirements before finalizing your plans. Taking these details into account early on can help ensure everything runs seamlessly.
Add-ons and Extras
Add-ons and extras can make your wedding catering feel unique and memorable. Dessert stations like chocolate fountains or ice cream carts, along with late-night snacks such as mini burgers or tacos, are always crowd-pleasers. Bar services are another popular choice, with options like custom cocktails or wine pairings. For example, mobile bars typically cost £5–£30 per head. While these extras elevate the experience, it’s important to factor in the additional costs they bring to your overall catering budget.
Tips to Stay Within Budget for Your Wedding Catering (An Insight from Our Caterers)
We work closely with our catering and food suppliers to gather the best advice for couples planning their big day. These insights, based on their real-world experiences, offer practical ways to make your wedding catering budget go further.
Tip #1: Simplify Your Menu
Keeping your menu simple is an easy way to manage costs while still serving delicious food. Fewer dishes mean lower ingredient costs and quicker preparation. For example, offering one meat dish and one vegetarian option can make a big difference to your budget. If you’re serving fewer options, make sure the portion sizes are generous so your guests leave feeling satisfied. This approach also helps reduce food waste, keeping things practical and stress-free.
Tip #2: Consider Buffet Service
Buffet-style catering is a smart choice for weddings if you’re looking to save money without sacrificing variety. It typically requires fewer staff compared to a sit-down meal, which helps lower labor costs. Buffets also allow your guests to serve themselves, giving them the freedom to pick and choose their favorites. With this option, you can still create a beautiful spread that’s both cost-effective and satisfying for everyone.
Tip #3: Choose Value-Driven Dishes
Filling and cost-effective dishes like pizzas or rice-based meals are excellent for keeping budgets in check while satisfying guests. Small touches, like an interactive pizza station or a colorful grazing table with seasonal produce, can make the dining experience more special without overspending.
For an added “wow” factor, consider unique options like live-fire rotisserie chicken, cheese wheel pasta, or Argentinian-style roasted lamb. Personalized treats, such as custom gelato flavors or interactive dessert stations, also leave a memorable impression. Combining value-driven staples with creative highlights ensures a dining experience your guests will love.
Tip #4: Book Off-Peak Dates
Booking your wedding during quieter times of the year can be a great way to save on catering costs. Rockin’ Rotisserie, for example, offers up to 20% off during months like February and March. Weddings held on weekdays or during the winter and early spring have also been known to come with discounts, as these tend to be less busy times for suppliers.
Shoulder seasons, such as late autumn or weekdays in the summer, can provide more flexibility in pricing and availability. Choosing an off-peak date can make it easier to secure the caterer you want while keeping costs under control.
Tip #5: Choose Local Caterers
Choosing local caterers is an effective way to save on travel-related costs and streamline logistics. Local teams are often familiar with nearby venues, which helps with smoother coordination and setup. They’re also likely to offer competitive pricing for events in their area, making it a budget-friendly and practical choice for your wedding catering.
Tip #6: Bundle Services
Bundling catering with other services, such as mobile bars or dessert stations, is a practical way to save money and simplify planning. Many caterers offer package deals that are more cost-effective than booking services separately. It can also help create a cohesive experience, with a single team managing multiple aspects of your wedding to ensure everything runs smoothly.
How to Determine Which Caterer Is Best for You
Finding the perfect caterer means choosing someone who understands your vision and can bring it to life. Start by researching caterers who specialize in the type of cuisine or service style you’re looking for. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, ask important questions about their packages, how they accommodate dietary needs, and how they manage logistics at your venue. For more ideas, check out more questions to ask your wedding caterer.
Tastings are an essential part of this process and can help you see if a caterer’s style aligns with your expectations. Use this opportunity to evaluate flavors, presentation, and service quality. For tips on making the most of a tasting, our wedding caterer tastings guide is a great resource. Don’t forget to trust your instincts. Working with a caterer who communicates clearly and shares your excitement can make the experience stress-free and enjoyable.
